So...you've got your image all colored up with whichever type of marker you choose (I happen to prefer Copics). But then what? You're lucky cuz I'm gonna tell ya...

The image above (left) was colored with Copic Markers only. The one above (right) is the same image, but I added colored pencils on top of the Copics. My preferred colored pencils are Prismacolor and Caran d'Ache. I choose similar colors, sure to grab the darkest shade and the lightest shade of that color. I also use a white Prismacolor pencil (THE BOSS OF COLORED PENCILS) and black. I go over each area to emphasize the shadows and brighten up the highlights.

For example, notice her legs in the image to the left above....kinda flat and dark. I went over the lightest parts (closest to you) with the white boss pencil. On the sides of the legs, which are supposed to be furthest away, I used a dark green and a dark pinkesh/reddish color.

Then....after you have all of your pencil down, you blend out the colored pencil with odorless mineral spirits and a paper blending stump. I prefer Gamsol because it is less toxic than other brands (from what I understand anyway). This takes away the graininess of the colored pencils and blends the colors.

The final step is to go back with the black pencil, dark brown for skin tones, and add just a little bit more to the shadows. I like to go over the eyes, eyelashes, and any unclear lines at this point as well....usually with a fine point marker (my preference is Micron .005).

That's it guys! Very easy and adds so much life to your coloring. I hope you find this post helpful. Please leave a comment below and let me know whatcha think of this process. I'd also love to hear of any other ways to add life to images.

Thx!

-B
